Introducing the xLS and xLSi
The IMS xLS is an ultra-low power seismic data acquisition unit.
Designed for fixed installations in hazardous areas with intrinsically safe requirements (xLSi) or in areas without electrical infrastructure or with low power requirements (xLS).

Key Features
- Ease of Deployment:
- Power, communication and timing can be supplied over a standard Cat5 cable
- Long range Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) allows cable distances up to 1 kilometre at 10 Mbps
- Repeaters can be used to extend the range beyond 1 kilometre
- Digitiser:
- 4 channels
- 24-bit resolution, 4 ksps sampling rate
- 110 dB dynamic range
- Processing and storage:
- STA/LTA triggering
- Seismogram buffering to non-volatile internal storage
- Low power:
- Less than 300 mW peak
- Sensor Interface:
- Designed for seismic sensors and compatible with IMS intrinsically safe geophones
- Capable of monitoring geotechnical instruments/sensors. Contact IMS to discuss your specific needs.
The xLSi is designed to meet the requirements of the latest intrinsically safe standards and is suitable for deployment in explosive atmospheres as part of an intrinsically safe seismic system.
Intrinsically safe electrical standards govern the design, testing, and implementation of electrical and electronic equipment used in hazardous environments where flammable gases, vapours or dust are present. These standards ensure that equipment operates with energy levels too low to ignite an explosive atmosphere, preventing fires or explosions.
The xLSi is designed in accordance with IEC 60079-0:2017, IEC 60079-11:2023, and IEC 60079-25:2010 (Ex ia I Ma). Compliance with these standards facilitates certification transferability across most international jurisdictions.
An IMS SPE Media Converter is used to interface with existing network infrastructure. The fibre optic variant of the IMS SPE Media Converter can be deployed in explosive atmospheres (Ex ia I Ma).

Due to the ultra-low power consumption, the xLS can be deployed into remote underground areas where power and communication infrastructure is unavailable at the intended monitoring location.Â
Power, communication and timing can be supplied over a standard Cat5 cable for lengths up to 1 kilometre. Repeaters can be used to extend the range beyond 1 kilometre. This is an alternative to running analogue sensor signals over long distances, which negatively impacts signal integrity due to cable filtering effects and general susceptibility to electromagnetic interference (EMI) of long cable runs.
